If you were to ask me to summarize what the bible is about in one sentence, I would have to say that it’s about human failure and God’s desire to reconcile those failures. From Adam to Paul, it has been one failure after another. Adam doomed humanity, Abraham slept with his wife’s servant, David murdered a gal’s husband after impregnating her, Solomen hooked up with a bunch of exotic ladies who turned his heart away from Yahweh, Peter denied Christ, Paul persecuted the church, and we could go on and on.
It’s incredible that humanity has made it this far, because if we are honest, we are a bunch of screw ups. Personally, this is what makes the gospel such great news. No, we are not good people. Romans in fact, tells us that there are actually zero ‘good people’, nope, not a single one. You may say that there are better people than others, but the bible tells us that if we fail in one aspect of God’s commandments, we are guilty of failing them all.
This is the very reason why God, became a man, born of a woman, and took all of our sins upon himself. He fulfills the law, in full, for us, and becomes our righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says ‘For he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.’ Jesus took upon our sin on the cross, so that we would become righteous through him.
The gospel is the greatest news that the world has ever seen. Because of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, we can be reconciled to God himself. He becomes our salvation. It doesn’t matter if you are a republican, or a democrat, black, brown, or white, Jesus is for everyone. Come as you are, and God will do the rest. All who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10;13)
Nothing in this temporal world will give you the life that you desire, because true fulfillment only lies when you are reconciled to the God of the universe through the gift that Jesus gave us on the cross. Fall on your knees and ask for the saving grace of Jesus because you are not a good person, and neither am I! That is the whole point of the Gospel!
So, as we approach Good Friday, and Easter, remember that you are not, and never will be a good person, and that is exactly why this weekend is the greatest celebration that we can partake in.
